Review of the Darryl Hall and John Oates album "Abandoned Luncheonette". The CD version of this great album was a VERY PLEASANT SUJRPRISE to me. I'm very pleased that it's even still available anywhere at any price. The CD sleeve even includes the lyrics for each song and the listing of the great studio players who worked to Darryl and John to produce this masterpiece.5/5(5).

Apr 20,  · This was the second release by Daryl Hall and John Oates, and man, there's no way around it, Abandoned Luncheonette was the absolute pinnacle for their mixture of rock n’ roll along with rhythm and blues, which those of us from Philadelphia called rockin' soul, where for my tastes, this album was never to be equaled.4/5().

The John Oates tracks (they write separately and together) tend towards acoustic mid-paced ballads (Had I Known You Better Then, I’m Just A Kid), whereas Daryl Hall tends to pen the slightly ‘poppier’ songs such as opener, When The Morning Comes and the funky Everytime I Look At You. There are some interesting diversions.

Abandoned Luncheonette, Hall & Oates' second album, was the first indication of the duo's talent for sleek, soul-inflected pop/rock. It featured the single "She's Gone," which would become a big hit in when it was re-released following the success of "Sara Smile.".

The first side is no slouch either: as it opens with the deceptively low-key "When The Morning Comes" and features a couple of first-rate numbers by John Oates ("Had I Known You Better Then" and the highly superior "Las Vegas Turnaround"), the salacious "I'm Just A Kid (Don't Make Me Feel Like A Man)" (with its icky "this is the cradle thief /5().

PhilMH 4th Apr Re the mixed-up B-side, Michel Ruppli's Atlantic discography shows that "Abandoned Luncheonette" and "When The Morning Comes" were consecutive master numbers, and respectively, so someone at Atlantic probably pulled out the wrong tape box, or possibly the tapes ended up in the wrong boxes - the master numbers for most of the tracks from the ABANDONED.
