Aug 04,  · The iconic bassist, Charles Mingus, leads an all-star eleven member band on this Duke Ellington standard for Song of the Day (SOTD). The song appears on Mingus’ swan song set with a band – and although the album is mostly songs from Mingus’ catalogue, the SOTD (a cover) and one new composition (“Celia”) – this release is no re-heated, re-hashed set of tunes.

Not at all. Mingus + Eric Dolphy = Amazing, and you get three albums worth of that. Sure, I couldn't do without Ah Um/Blues and Roots/Dynasty (etc.), but "Mingus at Antibes" is my favorite extended playing of all the Mingus I've heard. Dolphy is also featured on "Reincarnation of a Lovebird" and the two side-long rides of Town Hall '/5(8).

What makes Mingus great is precisely that, in contrast to Copland and Gershwin, when he explored the.
